Addiction Counselling

The source of addiction is early childhood environment and emotional loss.

Beyond Addiction

The Yogic Path to Recovery

Anna will assist you in demoting old habits by using addiction counselling methods that are based in: Beyond Addiction: The Yogic Path to Recovery program. This program has been supportive to many since 2008. Beyond Addiction is an internationally recognized treatment for anyone with addictive behaviours. The program was developed by Sat Dharam Kaur ND and Jivan Joti Kaur PhD, and integrates the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, Dr.Gabor Mate and experts in the addiction fields. Dr. Mate believes that the source of addiction is not to be found in genes but in early childhood environment and emotional loss.

In Yoga for Healing, Anna offers individual sessions that are based in Compassionate Inquiry counseling, breathing techniques, meditation, relaxation, self-reflection, lifestyle and dietary guidelines, stress management, hydrotherapy, nutritional supplementation for neurotransmitter and glandular balance, as well as addiction specific Kundalini Yoga exercises.

The 2 hour in-classroom or virtual sessions, may inspire you to participate in the 16 module live Beyond Addiction Yoga Program – a program that is being offered globally, in group settings, in various formats.

The Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation has approved Beyond Addiction: The Yogic Path to Recovery.

Addiction counselling supports individuals who are experiencing challenges with difficult habitual patterns that they wish to change; patterns that often create obstacles to their recovery from addictions and/or trauma.

Most of these patterns develop in an attempt to soothe the past trauma. According to Dr. Gabor Mate “When you think of trauma, it’s not just the bad things that happen to you. It could be the bad things that incur the trauma. It could also be the good things that didn’t happen.… Trauma is anything that changes you in the way that makes your future response to the world limited.…Trauma is the disconnection from the self on an emotional level. That’s why people don’t know how they feel. They disconnect from their bodies. That’s the first point about the disconnect from the Self.”

Addiction is defined as a complex psycho-physical process which manifests in any behaviour, whether it is substance-related or not. That person craves, finds temporary relief or pleasure in, suffers negative consequences as a result of, but still persists and is unable to give up the addictive behaviour.

Dr. Vincent Felitti , an American physician, said that “Addiction always serves a function”.

Trauma and Addiction Counselling aim at helping the client to explore this functionality of their behaviour, and finding their own ways of being empowered. The outdated coping mechanisms, such us addiction, would eventually be replaced with body awareness, confidence, courage, impulse control, and responsibility (responding to one’s needs).

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I connect to activities offered virtually at Yoga for Healing?

Once your payment is processed you will receive an invitation to a video conference using the Zoom platform.

What can I expect during my first Compassionate Inquiry session?

During the first Compassionate Inquiry session Anna will ask you some questions that will help her to understand you well (age, profession, health, and family background). The full confidentiality is very important to Anna. Any information you share with Anna will stay with Anna. You will then bring to the session the issue that you wish to resolve, and you will be facilitated to work through this with the Compassionate Inquiry approach.

Do virtual yoga workshops involve yoga practice?

Yes. You will be facilitated by Anna in your yoga practice, breathing exercises and meditation, with precise instructions and cues. It would be beneficial if Anna could see you practising but it is not crucial.

How do I prepare for the online yoga class?

Find a quiet space where you are, so there are no distractions. You also need a yoga mat, a cushion to sit on, a blanket, a note book and a pen. Most importantly, have available your electronic device that you will use to connect to the video conference, using Zoom.
